You can start the massage from the day your baby comes home. Here are some tips that you must follow for infant massage:

Make it a part of daily baby care regime:

  • Massage your baby everyday at the same time and stick to that schedule. Make sure you do not squeeze the massage time during the sleeping or feeding times.
  • Use an edible, unscented or vegetable oil for baby massages. Put oil in both hands and glide your hands gently on baby’s body. You can sue coconut, corn, olive or avocado oil as they are easily absorbed into baby’s skin without causing any harm.
  • Choose a comfortable temperature while massaging the baby. You don’t want your baby to catch a cold while he is without clothes for massage. Massage your baby in bed or changing table by keeping a towel underneath.
  • Look for baby cues during the massage. They might not be in the mood or cry when you put your hands on them. If they’re resistant then do the massage at another time. If you haven’t completed the body massage and the baby feels uneasy then it’s better to stop.
  • Be gentle while massaging and don’t apply too much pressure in the strokes. Stroking away from the heart to the wrists is a relaxing technique and is best suited for before bedtime.
