What Is Weaning?

Weaning is the process when baby switches from breastmilk to formula diet or solid foods. Till 6 months of age babies are completely on breastfeed so they can get all the nutrition that their body requires. When baby is gradually replacing the liquid diet with solid foods means that the baby is weaning. Weaning can be a major milestone for the baby which means major developmental changes as the baby transforms from an infant towards toddlerhood. You have to be patient during the weaning process because baby requires time and attention when we try new foods. Different people have different first baby food traditionally such as oatmeal, barky, rice or cooked soft mush. Moreover, fruits and vegetables are also a great option of introducing new foods such as apples, bananas, butternut squash, sweet potatoes or green beans. Give babies time to adjust so they can chew and swallow properly.

You know it is time for weaning when:
  • Your baby sits on their own in the high chair
  • Baby wants other people’s food and shows interest
  • Baby can swallow the food and doesn’t spit it out
If you notice these signs then you can gradually move towards softer foods. Make sure to begin with half spoon once the baby is ready and then move towards one spoonful during the day. Once the baby is used to solids, you can introduce sold food to their everyday meal.

Weaning Stages:
  • Stage 1: 4 to 6 months: Introduce the first weaning food
  • Stage 2: 6 to 9 months: Introduce soft finger foods
  • Stage 3: 9 to 12 months: Introduce family foods
Major food groups:
  • Starchy foods: potatoes, rice, oats, pasta and cereals
  • Dairy: Full fat yoghurt and cheese
  • Meat, fish, eggs and pulses such as lentils
  • Fruits and vegetables
When can baby drink?
You can introduce full-fat cow milk to your toddler’s diet at one year. Semi-skimmed milk should not be introduced until your little one is two years old.
