Signs Your Baby is Refusing to Bottle-Feed

Baby feeding can be an overwhelming task for many parents. It is sometimes harder than breastfeeding especially when they refuse to take bottles. When baby refuses to take bottles then things might get messed up. Here are some issues that you might face and understand how you can tackle them:

  • When baby starts to cry when they are put in a feeding position
  • The avoid drinking by turning their heads
  • Sleeping during the feed
  • Spilling milk instead of swallowing
  • Not sucking the nipple when bottle is given
  • Spitting and coughing out milk
  • Having little bit of the milk and then refusing
  • Not taking the expected intake
There are different reasons why babies refuse to take the bottle and these reasons can be behavioral in nature and must be addressed by observing the baby and looking for important clues. Here are some of the reasons:

Babies usually suck their thumbs or other objects for different reasons other than being hungry. Many mothers misinterpret this as hunger and try and feed the baby. Upon giving feeding bottle, the baby refuses and results in not taking the feed because in real the baby is not hungry.
When a baby is about four months old, the level of curiosity in them starts to increase. They are interested in everything that is happening around them such as kids playing, music, or pets- everything can distract him and lose focus upon taking the bottle.

Another reason why babies do not take bottles is that they might be tired. They must have not slept well due to hunger and hungry babies cannot sleep well. They create fuss and cry a lot while feeding.

Newborn babies are to be fed every now and then, even during night time. Once the baby is 6 months old, quit the night time feeding, as the baby starts to rely on feeding to go to sleep. Moreover, they might also start to refuse to take the bottle during day time and only want it at night time.

If you have been breastfeeding your baby till three months and beyond, it is most likely that the baby will have trouble transitioning into baby bottle. However, Philips AVENT natural feeding bottles are best for newborn babies who are on breastfeeding as these bottles are designed like a breast and give a natural feeding experience.

The bottles used to feed the baby must have a neutral milk flow. The bottle must be able to vent air otherwise the baby will have trouble taking the milk as the pressure inside the bottle builds up. Some babies might try and some might stop trying. Make sure that you always keep the air pressure neutral inside the bottle and do not screw the bottle very tight. Usually, air enters from between the rim of the bottle and nipple ring and if the nipple is screwed tightly then the bottle venting out air will not be done.
