Screen Time Suggestion for Children

The new generation of children seems to grow up with smartphones, tablets and TVs. These gadgets have become a very important part of their daily routine. Scientists now ask about the effects of new digital century on brain’s way or their way of thinking.

Effects of Screen Time

National Institute of Health conducted a study which seems to show that heavy screen use is correlated with lower scores on some aptitude tests and even some early brain changes. Early signs of cortical thinking make the brains grey matter compressed especially in young iPad addicts.

The increased screen time also impacts the toddler’s sleep. They make it a habit of using the gadgets before going to sleep or they would sleep if you do not let them use it.

However, these results are mixed and not yet conclusive. There is a lot more work that can be done before it can be accurately predicted how the screen time affects the sensitive little brains.

You got to make your little one understand and learn things in a polite way. Yelling or getting angry at them is not an answer as it only leads towards anxiety and depression. Set up their routine and make sure that they stick to them for a healthy lifestyle.

Screen Time Recommendations for Kids

There are however some recommendation for toddlers and children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children under the age of 18 months. They suggest that the parents, siblings or pets just play with them or they should have toys or some other fascinating outdoor activities. Children above the age of 18 months can have some screen time which should be non-violent nature shows and responsibly produced programs such as Sesame Street. For kids with the age between 2 and 5, AAP suggests screen time of not more than one hour of high-quality kids shows only.

What scientists have definitely proven is that speaking with children is very healthful to developing brains. So, whenever you can, watch the program with your child and use it as an opportunity to enhance the experience with a few questions and a bit of discussion.
