Fun Activities To Enhance Toddlers’ Writing Skills

Your preschooler is just beginning to tune the fine motor skills that he'll need to write letters and numbers with ability. Right now the attempts might seem like scribbles but that's okay. With the passage of time, your kids’ handwriting will improve. For now, your aim is to make writing fun and exciting.

Here are some ways you can encourage your child to write. Children learn in different ways and they're arranged by different learning style. But any child can benefit from the suggestions mentioned below:

  • Write together with your kid.  Whenever you sit down to write a note or a shopping list or to pay bills or fill out an order form, ask your child to join you. Give him a writing paper an order form of his own to doodle on while you take care of your business. Your child will gradually learn that writing is an important part of everyday life.
  • Use sand to "write" words. Help your child make letters and words out of materials like sand, glitter, or cake sprinkles. While baking with kids in the kitchen, cookie dough and pancake batter would work too and you will see the results for yourself. Make sure you also teach kids to clean up after working or playing.
  • Use modeling clay to form words. First, make large flashcards with letters of the alphabet or simple words. (Laminate the cards to keep them safe.) Then roll out thin ropes of clay. Ask your kid to outline the words or letters on the cards with the help of clay ropes. With this activity, not only he will learn to recognize the word but also playing with clay will help him build his finger muscles and hone fine motor skills that are required for writing.
  • When you are on a trip with your kid, keep a travel log or diary. Your trip could be a visit to the zoo, park, picnic or seeing Grandma’s house. Have your child bring his diary or notebook so he can jot down whatever he sees or does. Don’t yell at your kids if you think they aren’t doing it perfectly because everything takes time and practice to be perfect.
  • Play with alphabet fridge magnets. Playing with letter magnets on the fridge helps your kid practice writing and also spelling. Your kid can also outline the letters with the help of colored pencils or crayon. For portability, you can also attach the letters to a cookie tray.

Once your kids will learn to write that will be yet another milestone achieved your little one.
