Top Ways To Soothe Babies

Babies cry and that’s a good thing. This is the only way that we find out that our infant is cold, hungry or in pain. Usually, babies get irritable around sundown and continue to cry for hours. Hence, parents get concerned, tired and frustrated.

Exhaustion usually creates stress in the families which lead towards marital conflict, paternal and maternal depression and obesity. People make emotional decisions when they are stressed out and overtired.

When babies cry for more than 3 hours a day, doctors say that the baby is colic. Usually, babies are born 3 months earlier and as they are used to the womb sensations and once they are born they don’t get that, that’s why they cry as they miss the soft touch, jiggly motion, snuggle etc.

The rhythms experienced inside the womb keeps the babies’ relaxed. The calming reflex is a virtual off switch for crying and on switch for sleep.

Mothers use and mimic tricks similar to womb such as taking the baby for a car ride or turning on the vacuum cleaner to soothe the baby. Moreover, there are other womb-like sensations that give babies the womb-like experience.

Swaddle

Swaddling recreates the snug packing inside the womb and is the foundation of calming. It decreases restlessness and increases sleep. Wrapped babies respond faster and stay calm longer because their arms can’t move around. To swaddle correctly, wrap arms snug, straight at the side—but let the hips be loose and flexed. Use a large square blanket, but don’t overheat, cover your baby’s head or allow unraveling. Don’t swaddle babies the whole day just during fussing and sleep.

Side or Stomach Position

The back is the only safe position for sleeping, but it’s the worst position for calming fussiness. This type of soothing position can be activated by holding a baby on the side, on her stomach or over your shoulder. You’ll notice your baby mellow in no time.

Shush

Babies do not require total silence when they want to sleep. When they are in the womb, the sound of blood flow is louder than the shushing voice of vacuum cleaner. Hissy noise of fans or ocean sound often makes the baby fussy and they lack the sound of the womb. White noise is the magic sound to make the baby fall asleep.

Swing

Slow rocking is fine to keep the babies calm. Fast and tiny motions soothe a crying infant immediately. This motion is very much similar to womb-like feeling hence makes the baby calm.

Suck

Many fussy babies relax into a deep serenity when they suck. Some babies usually do thumb sucking while a pacifier can easily calm a baby.
