Protecting Infants From Cold Weather


Newborn babies are vulnerable to cold and they cannot even tell you when they are feeling cold or hot. It is the parent’s job to know and make sure that they baby stays warm and comfortable in the cold weather. Here are some precautionary things that you must keep in mind during the cold weather.

  • Do not overheat the baby surroundings by keeping the room temperature too high or into many layers. Overheating may increase the risks of SIDS.
  • Excessive baby wrapping may hinder the breathing process. Don’t use long scarves around baby’s face or neck.
  • Do not layer up the baby with heavy blankets because they will not be able to move the blanket on their own as it may lead towards a choking hazard.
  • Don’t cover the face to shield them against direct sunlight especially if the baby is less than one year. This might cause to uncomfortable breathing.
  • Don’t overheat your baby. If the room temperature has dropped down, stay at a cozy place and make sure you removing extra layers as required.
  • Don’t let baby wear fluffy jackets while they are harnessed in the car seat. This can compress the baby and leave space in between the baby and could make an easy movement in case of an accident.
  • Ensure your baby’s room meets the safety standards. Be careful while using heaters as they can cause fire burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. 
  • Don’t use soft and lightweight material mattresses as it increases the risk of smothering hazard and can also increase the chances of getting sick due to cold air trapped in the mattress.

Keeping your baby warm in winters is a challenging task for parents- you can pull this challenge off with little knowledge and to know how you can maintain constant body temperature in winters especially during night time. Don’t stress about it, make sure the baby is wearing warm clothes and is wrapped nicely and not exposed to cold for more than half a minute.
