Co-Sleeping With An Infant

Your baby has arrived and it is time to plan how to sleep with your baby. Here are some tips and tricks that you must follow when you are co-sleeping with your newborn baby.

  • Make sure that your bed is safe for your baby. Ensure that your mattress is flat and smooth. Never make your baby to sleep on a soft surface such as soda, pillow top mattress, bean bag or waterbed.
  • Keep your fitted sheet and bed sheet secured and should be pulled loose.
  • If your bed is raised off the floor, ensure the guardrail to prevent baby from falling down from the bed.
  • If your bed is placed against any furniture or wall, do not forget to check every night that there is no space between the mattress and the wall/furniture.
  • The baby must always lie down between the mother and the wall or guardrail. Other people at home such as fathers, siblings or grandparents are not as aware of the baby’s location as do mothers. You should be up at the minimum movement or noise by your baby.
  • Make sure that the size of your mattress is big enough to have enough room and comfort for everyone.
  • If you have excess weights then avoid co-sleeping with the baby. There might be a dip in the mattress and the infant might roll towards you which can cause a dangerous situation. Keep a bedside crib or cradle just in case.
  • Remove the extra pillows and blankets in the early months. Keep the baby dressed up comfortably and warmly during the sleep. Ensure that the room temperature is not overheated for the baby.
  • Avoid wearing night clothes with long ribbons or strings and also remove all jewelry or hair accessories before going to bed.
  • Avoid using strong perfumes or body lotions when co-sleeping with the infant. It might affect their delicate senses.
  • Never allow pets to sleep on your bed with your baby!
  • Never leave the baby unattended or alone on an adult mattress unless you know it is perfectly safe such as the mattress is firm and guarded or you have a nearby baby monitor on which you can rely.
