Pacifiers To Satisfy Baby's Needs

Babies are born with the need to suck. It is important as babies need the sucking reflex to help them eat and drink. Some babies do thumbsucking for a soothing and calming effect.

If your baby wants to suck beyond nursing and feeding bottles, a pacifier is what you need to satisfy your baby. Before giving your baby a pacifier, keep the following things in your mind:

  • Offer pacifiers at nap time and bedtime. This also reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). If you are breastfeeding then wait until breastfeeding before offering them a pacifier. This will take up to 3-4 weeks.
  • Don’t give pacifiers to replace or delay meals. Only give pacifier when your baby is not hungry.
  • Do not force pacifiers on your baby.
  • Never tie a pacifier around baby’s crib or neck. It may be very dangerous for baby’s health.
  • Always be ready for baby night waking. If your baby falls asleep with the pacifier in his mouth, then it is possible that they will wake up crying if the pacifier falls out of their mouth.

Things to keep in mind before buying a pacifier for your little one:

  • Pacifiers come in different sizes. You will find different pacifiers in different shapes. Try using the one your baby prefers and the one which is age-appropriate.
  • Always use a one-piece model for your baby’s pacifier with a soft teat.
  • The pacifier should be sterilizer or dishwasher safe. Make sure that the pacifier is clean and dry before you put it in the baby’s’ mouth.
  • Keep some pacifiers extra. You might lose them as they fall on the floor or outside.
  • Make sure that the nipple of the baby feeding bottle is not the same as the pacifier nipple. Sometimes babies suck hard and the nipple pops out of the ring. To avoid choking, keep the nipple different from that of the feeding bottle.
  • Do not use one pacifier for a longer period of time. Inspect them every once in a while to see if the nipple color has changed or torn. Replace them frequently.
